2001 Explorer Rough idle

Changed plugs on 2001 Ford Explorer 5.0 95000 Mi. and air filter. Now rough idle. Not before change. Then changed wires. Problem persists. Lightly cleaned the Idle Control Valve and blew out the Air sensor that is located just up-stream from the air filter. Problem is little better but persists. At highway speed, runs great with full power. Old plugs had 4 times the spec. gap. and experienced poor power and bad gas economy with some difficulty starting. Now starts great but after few minutes idle varies 500-800rpm. what's next? TWM

What kind of new plugs did you put in? Hopefully the same as the ones you pulled out. Do you still have the old plugs? If so I would put them back in and see if the problem is resolved. If so then you know you have an issue with the new plugs.

If you put in Bosch plugs remove them and install Autolite or Motorcraft. Also be advised that overly tight plug gaps cause a misfire at low speeds only. See if there is any way you inadvertently created a vacuum leak.
