'89 Civic Transmission Reassembly

A while ago I removed the tranny from my '89 Civic to repair the clutch, and while it was removed I decided to have a look inside. I considered a full rebuild, but decided against it due to the time and cost, plus the fact that the transmission still worked quite well overall. But putting the case back on is proving very difficult, thanks to the little retaining clip that goes on the end of the countershaft. I managed to get the case off without too much difficulty, but I absolutely cannot maneuver the clip into place during reassembly. I wondered if I can just remove the clip altogether - from what I can see, it serves no purpose except to prevent the removal of the cover. Of course I might be wrong, and that's why I'm asking first. Thanks.

Are you unable to get the snap ring to go into its groove all the way around the bearing?

Yes, and because of that, if you're having trouble getting it in, almost certainly it is because the bearing is not seated properly.

Can you feel the groove with your finger or a pick? If not, the bearing may need to go in a little bit farther. A screwdriver positioned on the outer bearing race (NEVER on any other part of the bearing) and a LIGHT tap or two at various points along the circumference with a ball peen hammer may get it to seat.

Although not familiar with the specific application, I can safely offer that rare is the extraneous component in any assembly operating as designed and intended.

If the two halves of the transmission case are mated properly with zero gap between them, then everything is seated correctly.

I'm wondering if it's possible to seat the ends, then somehow turn the bearing so you can walk the snap ring into the goove as you turn the bearing and snap ring past the access hole.
