ABS Question

I have a 99 GMC w/ 124k+ miles. Today the ABS warning light came on and stayed lit. Checking the trusty manual it says as long as the "BRAKE" light is not constantly lit it is ok to drive. I just won't have Anti lock brakes. I could hear a "pump" running after I shut the truck off. I am assuming that there must be a pressure type switch somewhere on the "pump". I had to pull the power connector to stop the pump from burning up. Is it possible that this switch could be "bad"? If so can it be replaced by a DIY's or is it something that needs to be done by a real mechanic? Thanks.

You need the EBCM (electronic brake control module) that is bolted to the ABS hydraulic unit. There is a relay that is built into the circuitry that is faulty, and you cannot replace it individually. Get ready to spend some big dollars. It's not that hard to replace, but it's held on by some very small torx screws and space is limited...real easy to strip out the heads on the screws.

I had a funnly thing happen on an old acura Legend - since yours is a lot newer, it probably won't be the case.

However, I had a light come on, and was advised of the huge(!) dollar aount to fix it as it was a 1 piece system on these things from the back to the front.

One day I was poking with the rear drums and since it was an older car, it had a big rim of rust built up on the rear drum where the pad was not rubbing at the edge. I knocked that all off with a hammer and the problem went away.

Coincidence? - who knows? - but it worked normally until I pitched the car years later. Maybe the thunking with the hammer fixed the sensor?
