airbags for toyota corolla

Hi there,

I want to buy a used Toyota Corolla (CE 1998, $3900, 60k miles) , which unfortunately had its airbags blown-up. This , of course, it is reflected in the lower price. Apparatently, the cause was a minor accident since there's no entry on the Carfax report.

The problem is I am not into cars, so I cannot realize if the lack of airbags can be or become a major problem in any way. Therefore it is a bit difficult to make my mind about buying it.

Any opinion here will be appreciated. :-)

Lack of airbombs is a plus to me.

A car without airbags will make you, your daughter drive safer.

An individual without a bodyguard will act much, much more "civil."

I switch from a 20-year old car only to be killed or hearings ruined by it.

There won't be a Carfax entry unless somebody reports it. If it never gets reported, it won't show up.

If you're in the USA, I'm not even sure it's legal there to sell a car without its airbags if the car originally came with them.

More importantly than the airbags, I would think you should be concerned about the structural integrity of the car. That bags deployed indicates a frontal collision of some force. How well has it been repaired?

Kids steal cars in this area and drive them into saplings to release the air bags for fun. I don't know how much force it takes to trigger the air bags but bumping into these small trees would not damage anything on the car.

I do not know if it is legal to operate a car fitted with air bags without the bags. It would be a good thing, in my opinion, as air bags are expensive to replace. The expense of air bags is one reason I cling to an '89 Festiva. I've had two slow speed collisions over the 16 years I've owned the car, both due to female drivers in front changing their minds about merging into traffic. When one of them restarted her car the backup lights were on. :)

Slow speed collisions are the only kind the Festiva can muster ;)

My dad had two of them at one time. I ran out of ways to give him crap about it!

US-spec airbags are prone to deployment at inappropriately low speeds.
