auto inspections by state

Anyone here have a list of which states require automobile inspections and which don't? Or is there a web site that has such a tally (if so, couldn't find one).

Thanks in advance.

Safety or emissions? Some states have both others have emissions and no safety. Some even have split areas where some counties have full emissions and safety and other counties have OBDII scans.

The province of Ontario considered an annual safety check some years ago, but rejected it as not having any material benefit.

Apparently statistics showed that between jurisdictions with annual PMVIs and ones without, there was no difference in collision rates or severity, in which mechanical defects were found to be present in the vehicles involved.

We do have a safety check that is done when the car's ownership changes hands.

Not sure if you are looking for safety or emissions so here are both lists.

States and Federal Districts with periodic (e.g., annual) vehicle safety inspections

District of Columbia (every two years Hawaii (every year, except brand new vehicles receive an inspection valid for two years, ambulances, rental cars, vehicles used in public transportation, and other, every six months) Louisiana (every year; emission test in the Baton Rouge metropolitan area) Maine (every year; emission test in Cumberland County Massachusetts (safety inspection every year, emission inspection every two years) Minnesota (Motorcycles; Random, annual) Missouri (every two years emissions testing in the St. Louis area) New Hampshire (every year New Jersey (every two years) New York (every year) North Carolina (every year; some counties require emissions testing as well) Pennsylvania every year; emissions inspections every year in 25 of 67 counties Rhode Island (safety and emission inspection every two years) Texas (every year; emission test in the largest urban areas) Utah (every two years for the first eight years, then every year) Virginia (every year; emission inspection every two years in certain urban and suburban jurisdictions) West Virginia (every year - safety)

States with safety inspection only required prior to sale or transfer Maryland (emission inspection required biennially[15])

States which only require federally mandated emissions inspections California (for most ZIP Codes, every two years for all vehicles made after 1975 which are more than six years old) Colorado (in some localities, every year or two, depending on age and type of vehicle Florida (six counties) Georgia (metropolitan Atlanta area only, every year, most recent three model year cars are exempt) Illinois (Chicagoland and eastern suburbs of St. Louis, Missouri) Indiana (Lake and Porter counties only, every two years) Nevada (Clark County and Washoe County areas) Ohio (seven counties) Washington (urban areas of Clark, King, Pierce, Snohomish and Spokane counties) Wisconsin (seven counties in Southeastern Wisconsin, every two years)

Are you sure this is correct? Other information online says FL has no inspections required anywhere.

If the info provided here is correct, which counties are they?

Out of date info. New York has a Safety inspection yearly (except for emergency vehicles used by volunteer fire departments) Also NY has emissions testing downstate and OBDII scans upstate. Check engine light on is automatic failure.
