Auto insurance question

Hi everybody, I have an old pickup truck which I almost never use and it has parking insurance on it only which costs $10 a month and which only covers fire, theft, vandalism, etc. This parking insurance does not legally entitle me to drive the vehicle. For that I would need at least p.l. and p.d. which would cost a minimum of $60 a month with the local motor association. My question is, are there any insurance companies which would sell me only 1 day long (or time lengths of that magnitude, e.g. 3 days or even only a few hours) blocks of p.l. and p.d. insurance so I could, for example, help a friend move and then once more effectively "mothball" the truck once more? I have been told that I could put the truck onto p.l. and p.d for 6 months and then once the move is over I could cancel the p.l. and p.d. and get a refund. I am looking for a "softer" option than this as outlined above. Does anyone here have suggestions or information which could help me in this way? I live in Alberta, Canada. Regards, Ian Douglas

I've heard 'folk tales' about some who went to the state and filled out some forms and became uninsured drivers. I've never checked into it and don't believe it but I have heard that.

Some insurance companies have a monthly plan that would be a better option. But i've never heard of anything less than that..

If you already have insurance on another vehicle you own, you can phone the insurance company and have that insurance switched to the other vehicle for a specified length of time, even for just one day.

I used to do this regularly when I had a summer car and a winter car. Drove my insurance agent mad.

Here in SC, an insurance holder can call his agent and give him the serial#, make, model, etc., and have it added to his present policy. They will send us an invoice on the additional cost in a few days. After a day's use, one could then call up & ask ins. co. to cancel that order--vehicle was not road worthy enough. IMO, that is a chicken-**** way to conduct business, altho' it's done. s

You can do this in Virginia. It costs $300/yr to legally register as uninsured, so you don't save much. And, of course, if you get into an accident and it's your fault, you're in big trouble.

I don't know about Canada. My bet is that it varies by province, just as different US states are different.

That said, I have antique plates on one of my older cars, which in this state means that I can only drive the vehicle a very limited amount. I have minimal collision insurance on the thing, and it's not very expensive because of the antique plates. May be worth asking your insurance company about, if the thing is old enough to qualify.

We had a similar possibility in Texas, but it may no longer valid. You could post a bond to insure financial responsibility in lieu of insurance.

Some large companies were able to capitalize on this, but it wasn't good for most of us as private drivers. You CAN buy insurance month to month here.
