Borg Warner E71P coil

Anyone know if the Borg Warner E71P ignition coil needs a ballast resistor?

Thanks,

Sam

Generally, that depends on the application. Systems that use resistors bypass it during cranking so that the coil gets more current.

Does it say on the coil "use with external resistor?" Most that need them are so marked, unless they were made before the mid-1950s.

Just says, "12 Volts" and "Use with Electronic Ignition" on it.

In that case I am guessing it has an internal resistance, but a smaller one than the external ballast that you'd expect with a points-type ignition. Just a WAG though...

Yes, it does. That's a Ford coil first used on the '73 Lincoln Continental w/460 engine and electronic ignition, and subsequently used on huge numbers of domestically-built Ford, Lincoln and Mercury products through

1991. Also used on some AMC models in the same year range. You can therefore use the ballast resistor for e.g. a '91 Ford Crown Victoria w/351 engine or '91 Jeep Grand Wagoneer w/360 engine.
