Buying a Mazda Question

Spotted a 2001 Mazda MPV in a small second hand car lot, the saleman claim that the car has only done 24000Miles(38900km), and only one owner. Had a good look of the tires, it seems that the tires need immediately replacement.

The question is that is it possible that a 24000 mile drive can worn all the trads of the tires, or the dealer has back clocked the dial?

Any suggestions and help are highly appreciated.

I think it unlikely that the odo has been reprogrammed. Just as unlikely that the tires on an MPV would be worn out at 24k miles. My first thought was that the good tires were taken off sometime in the past and these put on. Perhaps by the original owner. Or its not the original odo.

titles in some states require that the mileage be shown at time of sale, check

for previous transactions, and/or run a title search on the car.

you can change wheels/tires very easily, and original tires should show at least

have tread still, unless abused unmercifully.

door jambs, glove boxes sometimes contain clues as to mileage / etc.. ask for

the previous owners name / phone number, check the lic. # for owners through the court house records.

It seems unusual for a low mileage car to be on an independent's used car lot, but possible.

Is it possible that the odo has made a full turn-->it is 124K miles instead of 24k miles? It is a digital odo on the 2001 MPV, cann't remember how many digits are there on the odo.

BTW, the asking price is way below the local average dealer posted price.

124k will show noticible wear on everything. Detailing won't fix problems like wear on the door hinge pins, rust and burns on the dipsticks, small pits in the glass, headlight bezels sandblasted, etc.

Or the tires didn't get proper maintenance by the original owner.

I'd look at the driver side floor mat for excessive wear - this is a good indication as to the amount of miles on the vehicle in question - at 24,000 there should be minimal wear if not any wear at all. 24,000 miles = about 2 years of driving!!!
