Cant connect my battery ground wire to the car

i have a 1990 civic hatch and when i connect the battery to the ground wire beside the clutch cable it arcs off like it hitting a positive wire i don't understand whats going wrong because it worked just fine before and when i got a new ground wire to replace the old one it turned out like this.

P.S. when it arced off i think it may have fried my ecu and starter as well

Are you connecting the cables the correct way around on the battery?

Take a good look at the top of the battery for the "+" and "-" markings.

Further, how big a spark? You have to expect a small spark when connecting the battery due to loads like the computer, radio, under hood light, etc. With any modern car there is always some load.

Don't forget those big caps in the audio system power supply. There might be some other (large) electrical load inadvertently left on.

Run a test. Get a 12V test light and connect it between the battery negative post and the ground strap. If it lights, but thn goes out, something was just charging up. If it remains lit brightly, something is turned on.
