Yes, in the third world and other poor countries where conventional petroleum is too expensive for the bulk of the population. This is quite surprising news to me. It could remove oil wells entirely if it pans out.

The big problem with methane, aka natural gas, is limited range unless you compress it at VERY high pressures. This is also a problem, of course, with hydrogen.

Hydrogen also leaks out of any container due to the minute size of the molecules. However, the point about bacteria creating hydrocarbons and certainly higher order ones is certainly something I'd think worthy of more research.
