Chevy pick-up truck wouln't start

HI All, a friend of mine has a chevy pickup truck, I am not sure of the year, but it has a V-8 engine & manual shifter, and there are 2 fuel injectors on top of manifold.(inside the air cleaner)

the fuel pump was replaced recently as well and the inline fuel filter.

what I have observed is the following: when you crank the engine it will not start, unless you pour some gas on one of the throttle plates, and it will start right up and run pretty good, and you can see the injectors spraying fuel on the throttles plates.. but if you shut the motor off it will not restart unless you pour more gas on the throttle plates.

I have also noted that when the engine is cranking the battery voltage drops from around 12.00 volts to about 10.5 but if the engine is running its around 14 volts.

what I was thinking that the decrease in voltage was disabling the injectors.somehow.. has any body had similar experiences in the past and if so how did you correct the problem?

I am open to any and all suggestions, looking forward to your reply either here or at my E-mail. address below.

thank you in advance

I'll play.

so why was the fuel pump replaced? how long does it run after you put the gas in manually? (sounds like it never stops once you get it going?) Have you bothered to check fuel pressure during any of this? A model year would help others provide you other help.

Well, it obvioulsly isn't getting any gas, so maybe your fuel pump has gone bad, or maybe check the fuse if there is one....heres a simple test to see if the fuel pump is working... turn the ignition key to the on position..... you should hear a noise coming from the rear of the car for a few seconds....this is the fuel pump, unless of course your fuel pump is located on the engine....way back when, before they became electronic, thats where they went..... you don't mention what year the truck is, so its ahrd to tell if its electronic or not...

Good Luck..

Yes your correct I just found out its a 93 S-10 V-6 2.8 Liter

the fuel pump was replace a couple month ago because it quit. the new one seems to have plenty of pressure, but only testing with putting finger over the end of the fuel line :-( it will run as long as its running above idle.

thanks for your prompt reply

HI Fwed thanks for the reply, when you turn on the key you can hear the fuel pump run and there is pressure going into the throttle body and if you pour gas on the throttle plate it will start and run for a long time if the gas pedal is depressed and keeps it above idle. BUT if allowed to idle it will stop and not restart unless more gas is poured into the throttle plate. :-( any ideas what we need to change out to correct this problem ??

It really sounds like fuel isn't getting into the carb because you are saying that when you pour gas into the throttle plate, it will start. Either of a few things.... It isn't getting gas from the fuel pump.... or the fuel filter... you may want to make sure it was replaced in the right direction.....you might have to have someone actually look to see if its getting some, or you will need to replace the air filter......heres how to check.... start the car without the filter on (or try)... see if it works... then try it with the filter on.. see if it doesn't... I had a situation on a lawn tractor ( i know... different thing all together, but same principle) where if you took off the air filter, it started, but it you left it on, it wouldn't..... It sounds like its getting spark.... Anyway..... those are my eye deers.....hope something works for ya

Mission Accomplished.

My friend found out how to check the codes and they suggested the MAPS module. ( the unit that mounts on the air cleaner ) so he picked up one at the parts store for $30+ and now the TRUCK runs OK and he has a smile on his face :-)

thanks for all the suggestions from the guys that read this news group. some days you get the peanuts, and some days you get the shells.

I hope you all have a Happy new Year.
