dodge a/c issue

the a/c compressor was replaced summer 2007. i went on a one week vacation. i started the truck for the first time and got hot air instead of a/c. the relay is fine. the compressor is cycling. i went and got a can of a/c with the gauge on the top.

when i hooked up the can it warned me not to add freon. the gauge went into the yellow area/seek professional help.

any suggestions ?

Seek professional help. Or get a real gauge, and tell us what the high side and low side numbers are with the AC turned off and with the compressor running.

thanks scott - i spent 600.00 for the compressor and the freon charge last summer. i was hoping i could find a way to get the system to work without going for 90.00 an hour repair rate - if it was something simple.

the over the counter freon can has you hook it up with out running the engine. just to make shure it was ok i hooked it up to two other dodges in the driveway. the two cars read perfect on the cheap gauge on the freon can.

The problem with the cheapo gauge-on-a-can (well ONE of the problems) is that it only shows you the low-side pressure. In a normal or even an UNDER-charged system, the low side can actually read higher than normal pressure if certain other things or wrong. If the expansion valve is hung open, the low side pressure will be too high and the high-side pressure will be too low. Same if a cycling switch is cutting the compressor off too quickly. Same if the compressor isn't compressing.

If you bought a manifold gauge, or even a pair of cheaper gauges so that you could read both high and low-side pressures, we could tell you more.

It could well be something simple. But without even knowing the system pressures, you have no hope of ever diagnosing it.

Right, but this is not very useful information. Knowing the low side pressure with the engine off tells you very little... you need a real gauge set in order to know anything at all about what the system is really doing.
