fix dangling overhead console/reading lamp assembly

1995 Buick Park Avenue Ultra

The plastic overhead console (containing reading lamps and switches and sunroof switch) has broken clips and falls out of its recess in the ceiling and dangles by its wires. It bears a green sticker with the numbers 12519830, 101080 N/A, 91-2390-6. GM dealer says P/N is discontinued. It may be found for $25 on Ebay if you set up a search and are willing to wait, perhaps for years.

No need to replace the console or rig up anything exotic. Some polite GM engineer has provided for retaining the console with screws in case the plastic clips break off or don't work.

Remove the lenses from the reading lights---pry each one out by putting a small screwdriver in the slot. Remove the lamps (gently by pulling, after they have cooled). For each lamp there is a hole in the back of the fixture for that lamp. You can put a wood/plastic screw through that hole and drive the screw into the plastic screwhole-post that is part of the plastic back of the recess for the console. Replace the lamps and lenses and you are done.

I used two pan-head wood screws, about 3/4" long, with threads about

5/32" o.d., threaded on their whole lengths.
