Geo burbbled, then died: possible causes?

I've a friend with a '95 Geo Metro. While driving it one day, it coughed a couple of times, then -- to used his phrase -- it died. He's already changed the coil, throttle body, fuel filter, the plug wires and plugs, and he claims the fuel pump is working. Other possible causes of such a rapid death? (Note: I work three jobs, so if there is a delay in my getting back here, please don't take that as disinterest in your responses.)

Thank you.

Christopher

A broken timing belt comes to mind. If it isn't a timing belt he should spend some time testing instead of throwing parts at it. Does it have spark at the plugs? Fuel pressure? Bob

All good point. I had a'92 GEO tracker and the ECM went and there was no signal for the injector to open. Quick way to check spray starter fluid and is if it fires. Stan

Me 3 Check the Timing Belt. Wonder if that is a free wheeling engine or a interference engine?

I have had a four of the 3 cylinder Geos and had one timing belt break while I was driving and purchased one other with broken timing belt. In both instances there was no damage to the valves.
