GM, Chrysler in merger talks.

I think a more correct analogy would be a situation with two cinder block being supported in the water by one airbag each. Both air bags are leaking, so both block are slowly sinking. In an effort to save as much as possible, the two sets of air bags and cinder blocks are tied together and part of one (or both) cinder blocks is cut away to reduce the total weight. The air bags are still leaking, but because the total weigh is less, the remaining parts of the cinder blocks are sinking slower. Hopefully they now have time to patch the airbags and keep what is left afloat.

So what would happen is GM buys Chrysler, starts shedding duplicate products and dealers. Likely they keep the Jeep product line, but the rest of line is just turned into rehashed GM products (maybe they would keep the RWD platform used by the Charger) but mostly Chrysler and Dodge disappear, eliminating a bunch of jobs and excess capacity.

It would be a great deal for Ford :) Not sure if it would work out so well for GM. The best thing for both Ford and GM would be for Chrysler to sell off Jeep (to either Ford or GM) and go out of business. Worst thing for GM would be for Chrysler to get purchased by a Japanese company.
