My daughter owns a 1991 Mazda MPV Auto Tansmission and in the last few days she has noticed a whining noise (increasing in intensity with each passing day) coming from somewhere in the front lower engine compartment. This seems to happen only when accelerating and only after having driven a higher speeds (average highway) for a little while. Then when she goes back to lower speeds the whining noise is still there. If she turns the engine off for a couple of minutes and restarts then the whining noise is not there again until she goes at highway speeds.
So far she has spoken to a couple of mechanic type friends about this and they say it is probably the torque converter. That also seems to be a rather expensive fix. Can anyone help with any other suggestions?
Thanks
