The self adjusting wheel on the self adjuster what causes it to turn so that it knows where to set itself. There is a plate against the sprocket wheel , is it this that sets the distance?

Just to add a little, it uses a cable from the top hooked on one shoe pivot to pull up the adjuster bar if needed.

On some it self adjusts when you use the emergency brake lever (aka handbrake). On other's its when you use the brake pedal while going in reverse. There may be other systems, too.
