"How to troubleshoot anti lock light

I have an 89 F-150 with the anti lock light on. How do I troubleshoot the sensor to determine if this is the problem?

The first step is to check the level of brake fluid in the master cylinder.

To extract fault codes, locate the diagnostic test lead which is a black w/orange tracer single wire and connector that breaks out of the ABS harness just above the parking brake pedal. With the ignition switched on (engine can be running), momentarily ground the black/orange wire with a jumper, the ABS light will begin flashing a binary code. Follow the factory trouble shooting flow chart for the code displayed. The system only has the capability to store one code at a time which means that if there are numerous faults, they have to be repaired individually, then the vehicle test driven before the next code can set. Switching off the ignition will erase any stored codes, so if a fault isn't present immediately from start up, the vehicle needs to be test driven and the fault codes extracted -before- the engine is shut off.

On my '94, the sensor was under $20 so I just replaced it. Also, check and clean the connectors for the sensor(s) on the master cylinder. Top off with fluid. One or all of these cured my problem. Rex in Fort Worth
