Some were, believe it or not. There was one model that won nearly every rallye in Europe, at the time, and this chassis has recently been used as the rolling stock for a reproduction Porsche.

Most of the previous Skoda's were not considered to be prizes, however.

Modern Skodas are built under their new owner's (Volkwagen) supervision and quality program, and I think they are quite good.

They were notorious in the 1970s for their poor build quality and spartan, cheap interiors - with cheap plastic-imitating-leather seats and painted metal dashboards.

Some companies which gave their employees company cars offered a Skoda as a booby prize to the driver with the worst driving record (damage to paintwork, crashes etc) - usually as a short-term punishment until the next victim is made to drive the punishment Skoda.

I can remember getting lifts to work in a friend's mother's Skoda (a lurid green monstrosity with its engine at the back, a clunky gearchange and floor-mounted choke control). It was forever breaking down, and took a long time to restart if it stalled at traffic lights.

Yes, they have improved considerably and, like Spanish-made Seats which are also based on VW technology, are not far short of the quality of VWs. Nevertheless, the now-undeserved reputation from the 1970s still gives them a certain stigma.

Yes, it certainly does. The old Skodas were spartan, and had terrible interiors.

They had a sort of toughness, however, that one would expect out of some things that were made in Soviet satellite countries.

I understand that the steering wheels might well shatter in your hands in a cold Moscow day.

She said she is going to read the book.

Oh, posh! Why should she read the manual?... Cars nowadays are smarter than many of the people who climb behind the wheel.
