Idle problem with old Audi

Hi,

I've got a '86 Audi 5000 turbo that runs great but lately has developed an idle problem. Some times it will idle beautifully and now more frequently than not it has developed an idle stalling problem. It tries to idle and sometimes succeeds but otherwise stalls. I usually catch it before the engine dies and if the engine does die I put it in gear and it starts immediately. If the engine dies while the car is stationary it won't start for a couple of minutes.

It passed what we call Air Care here like a new car, with 0 CO and everything else way below average, so most likely it's not the oxygen sensor. When I disconnect the cable from the idle stabilization valve the engine dies, so that means that valve is working? The engine does try to regain a stable idle, though of course fails about half the time.

Also, someone suggested that I check the air intake hose that comes from the intercooler. When I squeeze the hose a bit the engine stumbles immediately and if I squeeze it a bit harder it turns off, is that normal? Is there a lot of pressure coming from the intercooler? I supposed that perhaps if there is a perforation then it might open.

As well, if I accelerate quickly past 4000rpm while driving there is this loud hissing noise and a sudden lack of power till I stop accelerating quickly. Could it be that exhaust is being lost through the turbo, or that intake hose letting through air?

This is a great car, amazing for its age and I don't want to part with it because of this stupid problem, if someone can help thank you!
