Interesting starting (non starting) problem

89 Chevy Van not starting. The engine cranks but won't fire. Headlights and radio also not getting power and fuses are good. Tail lights don't work but brake lights do. Wipers, power locks, power windows, and dash indicators all work. What's happening? Could this be a relay problem? A bad ground? Any ideas would help. Thanks Steve Robinson

Well, you have to get the lights working anyway... Could be connections, relays, fuses or fusible links. You need a schematic (local library or simple service manual).

See if you have spark now. Then when you get your lights working, try again

You are likely describing a blown fuse link wire. On your van they are located on the starter solenoid. They are about 8" long and have a soft rubber insulation on them.

If you want to test the main grounds, use a booster cable and run it from the battery neg to the firewall. If this fires it up, then the mesh ground strap is dead. It runs from the passenger side bell housing to the body just above it. There is a second small ground that runs from the battery negative to a bolt just behind the headlight. Check it for signs of melted insulation.
