Issue with 1990 Ford Taurus steering

I just picked up a 1990 Ford Taurus GL today at an auction ($350!!!). I noticed while driving it home that there's a serious deadzone while turning the steering wheel. First, the thing needs an alignment somethig awful (tuning the wheel to the right approx 120 degrees gets the car to go straight), but when turning the wheel back to the left, there's almost 180 degrees of either incredibly slow tire turning or nothing, once I get it past a certain point turining in either direction, the steering feeling comes back and it turns properly.

any ideas what this could be?

If he is lucky, his subframe is not hanging down from the corrosion issue on the subframe mounting washers and bolts. The bolt pulls though the mount washer and the subframe flops about.

I would say you at least need a new steering gear box or the mounting bushings are totaly gone.
