Micro-Chip Keys On New Accords: How Effective ?

Hello:

Have a new 2004 Accord.

Was wondering about the micro-chip keys that now come with the Accord, and I guess many other new cars also.

Are they really effective in preventing theft (other than someone actually towing the car away), or are they, and the ignition, relatively easily circumvented ?

Am particularly curious, as, if they are so effective, how is it that the Accord is one of the most stolen cars, apparently, out there ?

Is it just the older models before the micro-chip technology came into being for the newer ones (not sure of the year when first implemented) ?

Would be most appreciative for any thoughts on this.

Should I still use "The Club," or totally unnecessary now, and "might" just draw unwanted attention to the car? Opinions ?

Much thanks, Bob

Yeah, but it requires some kind of installations and waiting time. Assuming a crook breaks into your car, installs this device and leaves. At least they'll leave a clue and we'll wait for them to kick there butts.

And if you bring your car into service, at least you'll watch them closely. Tibur

Yes they are effective in preventing traditional car thefts. Now these frustrated criminals are resorting to other methods like:

- Breaking into your home to steal the keys, or

- Relieving you of you keys at gunpoint as you approach your "theftproof" vehicle.

This is a classic case of "unintended consequences" where the car maker has unintentionally increased the owners risk to personal safety (or the criminals safety also in areas that allow citizens to defend themselves)

snippers

More like easiest to steal, and worth far more in parts then whole.

These BYPASS modules you speak off are not as easy to use as you make it sound .

First you need at least 2 working keys to program them and all require at least 30 mins to install also the only universal bypass requires a working key to be placed instide it.

These bypass are only use for installing remote starters. so if you are having a remote started installed make sure it is installed properly as to not let theses bypasses be easily found or defeeted.

The PDF manual calls for 1 key. See below. or

Grounding a wire on the bypass unit should start the car. Where would you install it, if it were your car?

"PROGRAMMING: 2001-2003 VEHICLES: BLACK KEY MUST BE USED FOR PROGRAMMING When the transponder bypass is correctly installed, put the programming jumper to the "Programming" position "A". (The LED must be "On" in order to proceed to the next step)

1.Remove the programming jumper and place in position Fig.:C 2.Turn the ignition key to the "OFF" position.
  1. Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position: the LED will blink.
  2. Put the programming jumper to the "Programming" position Fig.:A
