'95 Taurus 165,000 mi. Lost all but Lo gear while driving. Can put it in Dr & can accelerate from stop. Stays in Lo. When I let off gas, coasts as if in neutral. Doesn't re-engage until RPM's pick up to match the speed in Lo.
Have Reverse. Fluid at bottom of cross-hatch on dipstick when cold.
Any tips?
Welcome to the Taurus Transmission Support Group. We've been wondering when you would finally join up. Unless your car is in extra good shape and worth a big investment, you now own a parts car, less a tranny.
Sounds like mine 3 years ago, a gear broke, rebuild-replace-throw away.
Might be worth a trip to the trannie shop and have them put a shaffer shifter on it and do a diagnostic. If your lucky, you could have a stuck solenoid,VSS problem or a valve body problem. Call around and find a shop that will do a free diagnostic. Somehow, i am not optimistic. I have got a spare in my garage for my 93. 200K and its still alive. But its showing signs of Alzheimer's...... (or FOrdsheimers)

Is this group not for questions, or is it only to share mutual wisdom with other techs? If not, I'm sorry to bother you with this added non-relevant question, but can you direct me to the correct group for lesser ones like me. (What is this group for? Is this a job application group?)
I'll try to be more precise in my terminology. Is there an Auto Repair Terminology group that I can ask when I don't know the correct word so I don't waste the valuable time of experts like yourself? If not, maybe someone (you, maybe) could start one? Think of the power one would have.
What's a troll? . . . Oh wait . . .you may be thinking you're on a fishing group. Maybe that's why you mentioned troll.
I'm sorry . . . too poor to hire people if I can avoid it, but I guess that lessens the work that pros like you make (Excuse me. I meant to say have.). I read manuals and do repairs myself, due to necessity. I try to figure out the possibilities with the symptoms present, consider the variables, guess at the solution, roll up my sleeves and work on the more difficult problems that I have tools for. In the meantime I ask friends for any insight they may have. I don't ask anybody to do the work for me. I do it myself. If things go well, I might be able to finish in a couple of weeks of pecking away in between my workdays (which do not involve car-related matters). I ask questions because I don't know the answers.
I thought with the wonders of the internet and the kindness of others, groups like this might be an excellent place to get some insight into problems that I have not experienced in my 45 years of "compulsory training" in car repairs.
Mostly the varied repairs I've done have only been done once and they were fixed and AOK afterwards (I've managed to keep two of my past vehicles running for over 250,000 mi.)
Anyhow it's good that you question my motives and desires. A lot more "users" out there, today than there were 30 years ago. You can't be too careful, can you? You're right to try to expose new members to protect everyone else from dangerous predators infiltrating the auto tech group. It makes me more careful to assess my own motives when I proceed through life.

============= ============= Mr. Knukkles To address a few of your concerns, this group is here for techs to vent frustration over having to work 5 days a week, 52 weeks a year, for over 30 years in an industry that is hopelessly dependent, for the most part, on customers that come through the door expecting cheap miracles, low cost snake-oil remedies, and free or low cost repairs with absolutely no second thought to the dude that's doing them. Also, it's here to help folks like you muddle on through life with the help of others because your damned lazy to do a simple google in an NG on a topic that's been addressed a thousand times in the past.

Do a repost, let us know what you came up with. After all, we're rooting for you, we want you to ATTEMPT to fix this thing yerself. We know you can't. But..we want to see you try.
and last....... I was not questioning yer motives. I was hoping you would come back with some proliferated overly selfindulgent post that would open the door into a better understanding of your overall worth as a customer. You know, drag out of you some spewing of insight into your thought process, some sense of what you have in you as a man, some hint as to your level of patients and understanding toward technicians......don't want no arse-hole customers you know. Lifes jest to short. It's easier to spend a sec or two right up front to eliminate a few weeks of bullsheet. What I expected, and what you gave, was a selfindulgent ranting of selfworth, a brief synopsis of your experience, a gloating on your history as a species of the human race, and doorway into your life. Now that i see that you've got balls, are somewhat literate, and have a firm grasp of the english lanquage in written form... I would like to save you a lot of time, anquish, wasted money, and most importantly skint knuckles........
here's the facts about your vehical, it's symptoms, and what it's gonna take to enact a satisfactory repair.......
