On-Star: Thoughts On ?

Hello,

Thinking of purchasing a new 2009 Buick LaCrosse.

Re the On-Star system.

Seems awfully pricey (after the first year)

Also seems like a regular in dash GPS makes a lot more sense, as it would give visuals re roads, etc. rather than apparently just text or voice prompts.

Am I missing something with this On-Star business ?

However, there doesn't seem to be any place on the new LaCrosse for an in-dash GPS even if one should want one. Dealer says try it, you'll love it, but of no real help.

Any thoughts on ?

Thanks, B.

OnStar can be subpoena-ed to divulge your movements (these days, would they even bother with the paperwork?), and sometimes on-star employees listen in- they can turn on the audio to their end without you knowing.

OnStar can go straight to hell, in my opinion.

I once got lost near La Porte,Texas.I asked some people over there for directions.Other than that, I have never gotten lost before. On Star is good for some people. You might like On Star. cuhulin

In the era of cell phones with built in gps and car gps's, I'd say On-Star is an expensive redundancy.

My son has a Mercedes with in dash gps and Blue Tooth which responds to voice prompts. He can tell the car where he wants to go and it directs him, but, you're probably looking at a $1,000 option.

I prefer paper city and state maps. cuhulin

There is a gal in Ireland. She was following directions from GPS.She wound up opening a farmers gate and then getting stranded by a railroad track. cuhulin

Yep

On Star gives you turn by turn and access to a human. It also does provide some safety with the collision notification.

Plus it can let you into your car if you lock yourself out. Remember that Tiger Woods commercial?

Locked my self out half a century ago when I first started driving. Have carried a spare key in my wallet since but have never locked myself out again. If I had put the money aside that I could have paid for a service like On Star, I'd probably have enough to buy a new car ;)

That's pretty neat... It can let you in if you lock yourself out just like Ford products could do with a touchpad in about one second fifteen years ago. Gotta love progress....

It is.

A normal GPS is a lot more useful to me.

If you are I'll be damned if I can figure it out. They can unlock your door for you if you happen to be somewhere that has signal (like not in a parking garage or other structure) and they can call the popo if you crash your happy ass in the middle of nowhere and can't call them for yourself. I have a hide a key and figure the chances of crashing in the middle of no where are rather slim (God is probably listening and planning to teach me a lesson).

There is no option on the LaCrosse. It is available on the Lucerne at a 2k dollar premium. My advice? Go buy a nice Garmin for a quarter the price and be done with it.

Can it let me into someone else's car if they lock me out?

Depends on your state of paranoia... If you have a ton of money and are scared of butterflies, then maybe this is for you.

If you are like most of the rest of us, you will not need it, it is an extra expense, and it will never influence your life.

I tried that with this really neat Buick SUV I saw in a remote and deserted parking lot. The OnStar lady didn't believe me when I said I was Tiger Woods and that this was MY car.

So how come the touchpad idea never caught on? Did immobilizer laws pre-empt it?

When you first initialize it on the purchase of the vehicle, you need to give them your pin number before they will unlock it. You still need a key to start it.

So try it for the first year and then decide if you want to renew.

I have seen some reports that in-dash GPS will actually lower resale value.

why, me

The keypad is still around. Standard on some Lincoln's and I presume Mercury products but don't know for sure. I go to the beach a lot and don't want to carry anything with me so find it very handy to be able to just lock the keys in the car.

If your car gets 'jacked, can they turn it off right where the cops are waiting?
