purchase of 1977 mercedes 300d

hey there, i test drove a 300d today and the ride was great. the interior is in pretty good shape; the woodgrain has the protective cover peeling. the right front door doesn't open from outside, the driver window has problems going up, and there is a piece of trim missing from the right side. the engine works fine, and everything else is great. the selling price is 2600. should i go for it?? also, it accelerates slower than molasses, is that normal?? i can get it up to 75 though. also what kind of mileage does it get. thanks, matt

You are considering purchasing a maintenance intensive, unreliable,

*OLD* car that is going to be very expensive to keep in good repair unless you perform all current and future repairs yourself.

The asking price is high for anything but a genuine museum piece in as new condition.

Unless you are super knowledgeable about old German cars and have the time, tools and inclination to work on a labor of love (as in not just a car for transportation), you should look elsewhere.

Post this over in alt.autos.mercedes, there are a bunch of 300D owners over there. As for acceleration, what do you expect from a 67HP engine? On the other hand, you can get close to 30MPG.
