Re: 97 Cavalier brake prob

Is the jerkiness on slippery roads only. You apparently have ABS which

No switch on a 1997 Cavalier but there are other ways to disable them if that is the problem.

Which could be a very bad idea if a Cav uses dynamic proportioning through the ABS unit. (don't know whether it does or not; but if it does then disabling the ABS could cause too much pressure to go to the rear brakes, causing very unstable performance in a panic stop situation.)

But, it could be a very good idea if it doesn't. The fact is that there is not a switch to disable ABS on a 1997 Cavalier. If the owner wants to disable them to troubleshoot he has to do it some other way. Or, as suggested, he could read his owners manual.

Also if he is loosing a lot of braking when they are activated his rear brakes need servicing.

Okay here it is.... There is no switch to disable the ABS. I dont, at this time, have an owners manual, nor do I have the talent or skill to do something about the ABS myself, I would have to have a mechanic do it, which is okay. The jerkiness doesnt happen on just slippery pavement, but it does happen more on snow. The jerky noises emanate from the front of the car, almost like its under the hood someplace on the drivers side, remember I said almost. I have been told by a Chevrolet mechanic that if the brakes are hard when this happens it could be the brake booster that needs replaced, or it could be some type of vacuum problem, but he also said since it dont throw off a code, it could be a pain to resolve simply.
