I'm not sure what you could be referring to for "real world testing". There are so many variables involved in the real world that it's almost impossible to duplicate real world conditions. In order to truely compare, you'd have to have both follow exactly the same path at the same time for weeks on end. The usage would have to be based on the actual recorded driving routes and speeds.

I just got 51.1 MPG over 451 miles in a 2002 Prius. Much of that was freeway driving with 4 passengers. That's real world, but I have no idea what a 2002 Civic would have done on the same course in the same traffic with the same load.

As for inefficient...... Compared to what? I don't know of any cars that currently do 0 to 60 in 4 seconds and give better than 20 mpg.

Now you are comparing three different classes of cars. That makes no sense. Shell made a 1 seater that gets hundreds of miles per gallon, but that, too is in a different class.

The Prius does a wonderful job for it's owners, as does the Honda. There's no reason to make up bad things about either of them.

Just got back from Bakersfield. Drove a '98 Jetta TDI. Got 47.3 mpg. If you check the topography between Orange County and Bakersfield, you'll see there is a dramatic altitude change leading to the Grapevine grade.

Consumer Reports did the Prius this month. Got 35 mpg city and about 50 highway. The city number is very low compared to the EPA estimate (60?). I've read that the EPA test cycle greatly exaggerates the city mpg results that hybrids get.
