Bad plug wires.

Probably an ignition problem, like plug wires or a bad ignition coil. This will not set a trouble code on pre-OBD II cars (pre-1996).

Just a note to those who replied on this thread -- THANKS!!!

I put in a fresh set of spark plug wires this morning and it has solved the problem. My car hasn't run this well in probably five years. It was almost a ridiculously simple job.

One thing I discovered as I was changing the wires; when I pulled the wire from Cylinder 6, the wire pulled out (separated, tore, broke) of the boot!! Mind you, this was barely more than a gentle tug, so I suspect that was probably the *specific* source of my performance problems.

What gets me most is that the local GoodFireYearStone garage wanted $178 for the privilege of new plugs and wires. I did it myself for about $39 and maybe ninety minutes of elbow grease. My kiddo helped me and we had a blast doing it, so that was one of those "priceless" bonuses.

Anyway, the car runs fantastically now and I thank all of you for the plug wire suggestion. You hit the nail on the head. It just makes me wish I'd replaced those wires a looooong time ago.

I don't understand. Of course it will be cheaper if you buy the parts and put them in yourself. When I installed our garburator, I probably saved myself a hundred dollars, when I have repaired the dishwasher, washer, dryer....etc....I save tons of money. That doesn't mean that the trades people that want a lot of money to repair those items are outrageously priced, it just means that I have the knowledge and ability to perform my own repairs. Plus, I'm probably almost as cheap as you are and hate parting with good money if I can do it myself.

Do you expect a mechanical repair facility to perform the repair for just slightly over what you were able to do for? What do you do for work, and how valuable are you?

Yes, that's always a bonus.

Ummm....I don't see $138 of value in pulling out six wires and putting in six wires...but I digress...I really didn't intend to start some sort of philosophical argument over this, just wanted to say thanks to those who graciously helped...sorry if you didn't like my comment.
