Removing the front wheel rotor

I have a 86 Cavalier, front wheel drive and 2.0 engine. I am changing the rotors and break pads for the front wheels. After removing the break assembly, I couldn't get the old rotor out of the shaft. Rotor is really rusted and hasn't been removed for three years.

I was wondering if anybody has any tricks for removing it. I put WD-40 and haven't tried it again. Thanks

Be sure it doesn't have a screw or two holding the rotor to the hub. A lot of cars have a small phillips screw there just to keep the rotor in place with the wheel off.

Also, WD-40 is a poor rust penetrant. It is designed as a Water Displacer. Your friends here are PB Blaster and Kroil (harder to find). Heat is also good, as is the BFH recommended by the other poster.

Good luck

lol I didn't know how ubiquitous BFH was.... I wanted to use it.

Something else I've tried with success is to put the brakes back together and leave the wheel off. Start the vehicle and (with your foot firmly on the brake) shift it from drive to reverse, giving it some gas in both directions. You can loosely put the wheel back on in case your firm hold on the brake isn't firm enough and it drives off the jack.

Curses! The BFH sulks in the toolbox.

I guess it's best though. At least nothing and no body got hurt.

Good luck.
