Repair Estimate on 99 Olds Intrigue Power Steering

The power steering seems to habe gone out on my 99 Olds Intrigue. Whenever I go to turn it takes alot of muscle to turn the wheel. How much of a repair bill am I looking at here? And yes, I checked the power tseering fluid and it was ok.

Here's another idea, how's the belt? Is it it snug? Is it even on there?

Have this diagnosed right away. Steering is too important. If the belt is OK and there are no extra noises and it's the very same turning right or left, chances are the booster is bad (leaking). It could be as simple as a vacuum line or check valve. It's a few hundred to replace unless you get a used one from the recycler.

I apologize for being asleep. Forget that booster idea. I was thinking of my own need for a brake booster. The steering has no booster other than the pump. But have that steering checked right away. A steering rack might cost you $400-600 and a pump could be $200-300 I guess.

I just saw a new recall that is just about to go into effect and I believe it includes your vehicle. There was a steering gear lower bearing recall for minivans and for Cavalier/Sunfire type vehicle....but it appears that GM is extending it across the board.

You may want to do some inquiring about this at a dealership before you spend your own money. Or at least keep "any" receipts for any work done as you might be able to get re-imbursed later.

I just saw this recall notice on the shop foreman's desk....so many dealership personnel may not be aware of it...if you ask them about it.

Well folks, all is well. Took it in and they said they couldn't find anything wrong with it. They drove it around and it worked fine. I've had the car for about two days and the steering is fine. I will however inquire about that recall. Thanks!
