On the web, Google testing robot cars cuhulin
I worked on a project of robot cars for awhile. My concern was that it was a solution looking for a problem. Unlike the Google car, however, this was one that only would work on certain designated freeway lanes (required cooperative infrastructure), and a driver could only use that lane by invoking autopilot. How many drivers would rather let a robotic system drive their car than driving it themselves? Is there really a demand for robotic cars?

Well BMW sure thinks so for one. They've built a completely autonomous M5. Demand is perhaps the wrong question, It might come down to a with for a legislative way to reduce highway accidents. At least to start.
Those people who are driving and at the same time, texting, talking on cellphones, using a laptop computer, reading a paper, a book, putting on their makeup, any number of things they should NOT be doing while driving. They would buy those robot cars. cuhulin

I doubt it very much. It takes away their "freedom". They'd be the last to buy one IMHO.
I'm thinking it would be kinda handy to send the dog for a 6 pack of beer with something like this.

Yeah, but how do you get the dog back *in* after he gets to the beer store? Only a human can get a dog in a car. Anything will get him out.
A convertible with the top down, or a car with an open sunroof, for those doggy runs to the beer store. cuhulin

And an automatically deployed cat tied to a seat to act as a dog retrieval device perhaps?
