rough idling, stalling and loss of power

Hello,

I would appreciate any suggestion on the following problem in a 1989 Nissan Sentra. Last week, it started idling roughly and sometimes even stalls a few seconds after the engine is started. If the engine does not stall, its RMPs change spontaneously from very high to very low, which gives a car quite a vibration. The car also responses slowly to accelerator and loses power too. Is it most probably spark plugs and/or wires?

I was also wondering if fuel carburetor cleaners would help in case the problem has something to do with the fuel system?

Thanks in advance, Yuri Strukov

Not unless they are extremely old and/or have never been changed. The plugs can be fouled, which you can sometimes clean off by simply running the engine up thru the gears a few times.

You don't mention where you are, but this is about the time of year some areas switch over from summer to winter gasoline mixes. Some engines don't much care for the winter mixes. If this started happening a few miles or days after a recent fillup, try adding an octane booster or simply run the tank down and fill up with premium from a different station.

Clogged fuel filters, dirty injectors, clogged catalyst, vacuum leak, and several other causes. Try the cheap one of simply changing gas first.
