Scout / Motorcraft Carburetor help?

Hey All:

I've got a '71 IH Scout 800 with a 304, and it has a Motorcraft carb on it. I don't think it's original, and I'm wondering if it's close to what should be on there...

It has a tag on it that states D4PE FB A 8G-10.

I don't really know what the numbers mean. I think it needs a rebuild, and I don't want to rebuild it if it's too "large" for the engine.

Any help would be greatly appriciated!

IIRC the IH Scouts used a Carter Thermoquad carb... unless you have an emissions inspection I'd go with a small (500-600 CFM) Carter AFB ("Edelbrock Performer") or AVS ("Edelbrock Thunder") which are still available brand new.

I'm clueless re: the Motorcraft carb; I'm not a Ford guy.

Hi Nate

I think the larger engines did and I forgot to specify it had a 2-bbl carb...Apparently it had a Holley when it was new, but someone stuck this on there, and the truck seems to produce a fair bit of black smoke and sound a bit flooded when it's revved, but the choke is wide open.

I'm not much of a Ford guy either...I've played with a Carter on an older 318 and a few Quadrajets, but not much in the way of this beast...

The carb you have is for a 1974 Torino w/351c engine. Crossed the number on the Holley web sight. Original carb was either manual or automatic choke Holley numbers 64-3257 auto and 64-3137 manual choke.
