Setting it on *fire*? surely there was another cause?
I *guess* I could see the rim having something to do with it - quartz in the road and steel in the rim. Flint and steel right?
Perhaps someone filled the tire with gas?
Flat repair in a can?! That crap will blow up when breaking the bead off the rim.

*****Maybe used to be.. Not now. The propellant is not flammable.
I would say it wasn't really a spare tire. Just an IED made to look like a spare tire. Might have been filled with LP or something similar.
My guess is that running into a spare tire on the road could destroy it. Running into a spare tire could also mess up the front end of a car and cause fuel leakage which could start a fire. This could easily be mistaken for an exploding tire if your deductive reasoning is on the sketchy side.
I agree. If you ran into an ordinary spare tire, you didnt get a firey explosion from that tire that caught your car on fire....
I think when the car hit the tire/wheel, it burst and tore up part of the car's fuel system and that caused the car to catch on fire.I am only guessing though. cuhulin
