Stalling on a '89 Cutlas Cierra 2.5 Tech 4

I had a bad control module on my '89 cierra 2.5L Tech 4 motor. It was recommended that I also replace the crankshaft sensor as well since it's located under the coil pack & control module. So I had the module & crank sensor replaced. I get in and it starts right up. I put it in reverse and when I hit the gas it stalled. I restart it and proceed to back up. I put it in drive and now the transmission shift points are waaay off. I pull over and raise the hood and I notice the trannie cable is unclipped. I snap it back in place and now everything seems fine until I stop at a light. The light turns green and again when I touch the gas it stalls right away. It starts up and I proceed once again. This happens about 3 out of 10 times the gas is pressed. If I two foot the gas & brake to keep the rpms up a tad it's fine.

My question is can a defective module or crank sensor cause this problem?? I also have one of those GM code readers and it tells me there is a DIS short.

Thanks in advance.

I think it seems your idle speed (engine speed when not stepping on gas pedal) seems too low. Try cleaning out the throttle body with carburetor cleaner. Try disconnecting rubber hose to throttle body. If you have a Map sensor start car and put in park and set brake. Spray in throttle especially at hole before throttle, you might have to open throttle while spraying to keep engine from dying. If you have a Maf sensor Try disconnecting hose to rubber hose to throttle body. And put in straw from carburetor cleaner in hole wrapped with towel to prevent too much leakage, then start car and open and close throttle while spraying. Don't forget to put in park and set emergency brake.

Did you reset the computer to clear the codes after your repair. If not pull a battery cable for a few minutes and reset the computer then drive it around a bit and see what codes if any you have. You need to get that DIS code cleared up before you even try to troubleshoot further.

Yes the computer has been reset several times.. I also replaced the Idle speed motor & calibrated it, & replaced the map sensor, & TPS sensors. Also check for vacuum leaks.

I thought I had fixed it when I replace the plugs.. One was cracked, and it stopped missing when I put the new plugs in but it still stalls :(

Also sprayed carb cleaner around intake etc to check for leaks.

Here is the code (all listed under one code) according to the manual:

Electronic spark timing (EST) circuit - open or grounded

Direct ignition system (DIS) fault - bypass circuit open or shorted to ground during engine run.

Fuel cutoff relay circuit - open or shorted to ground.

I'm wondering if one of the grommets that is under the module could cause this or if the module is acutally defective?

Thanks Chas
