Stereo light strange problem

I have a strange problem after I transplant a stereo from another mazda vehicle onto my 93 mazda 323. The problem is whenever I turn on the headlight, the light inside the stereo will turn off , and when I turn off the headlight, the light in the stereo will come on ! Exactly the reverse of the way it should work.

So now the unit has light on during the day, while the light is off in the evening when I need it the most.

What cause this strange problem ? When I install the unit I just plug in the two harness and the antenna feed.

Could someone kindly tell me how could this be fixed ?

Does your dashboard light dimmer affect it at all?

You are going to need to check the wiring diagram of your car and the car the stereo came out of. If I remember correctly there is an illumination pin in the connector. Your car may have it on a different pin than the donor car.

Simple...

The light needs to be BRIGHT during the DAY because it's competing with the sun to keep the display readable. At night, you don't need as much light to be able to see the display so it makes it dimmer... It's been this way on all the cars I've had.

Try adjusting your dashboard brightness knob.

I assume the original stereo had a digital display and the new one doesn't?

Most head units will reduce display brightness when the headlights are on. Find a wiring diagram and see which wire controls this.

Thanks everyone for sharing your knowledge. No it is not affect by the dimmer, and when I said the light on the stereo is off whenever I turn on the headlight, I meant it is totally off. So when I drive in the dark I cannot even see where the stereo is. And when I turn off the deadlight, the stereo light comes on !

One of you mentioned this car might have a different pin responsible for the illuminator, may be this is something I can investigate by looking at a wiring diagram. But to me this is too stupid for a car company to have different pin arrangements on different cars. But oh well car manufacturers are like that aren't they.

Thank you all again.

Is the light grounded?

Don't have a diagram? Flip on the headlights, which ever wire responds, on back of stereo, slip it off.

Not every manufacturers.

Sorry I am totally ignorant when it comes to electronics, can you explain your question a little bit ? Are you talking about the headlight or the stereo light ?

Do I do this by using one of those "meter" with a probe ?

It sounds to me like the stereo light is not properly grounded and is grounding itself though the headlight/park/tail light circuit. When you turn on the headlights the stereo light is no longer grounded and therefore turns off.
