"thump" on corresponding to rotation

Hello - this is a 1990 Hyundai Excell GL with an automatic trans and the 1.5 liter engine.

Recently it has developed a thump sound that corresponds with wheel rotation, but NO VIBRATION or other symptoms that I can detect at all.

I've replaced the brake pads on the front discs, and had the real drums inspected by a mechanic (brake specialist) who said they're both ok.

I cannot find any loose bolts or other obvious problems, visually.

Any ideas or suggestions or similar experience related in here would be much appreciated. Otherwise this is one heck of a great little car that I've had since brand new.  All I've had to do with it is routine, scheduled maint- enance and never had a serious problem.

Thanks in advance of any help - Pedrito

That would be my guess also. Sometimes you can see the spot where the belt is separating, sometimes not. If you lift each wheel off of the ground and spin, you may be able to see a bump. Place something close to the tread or only lift slightly off of the floor and you may be able to see a slight wobble. You may also see a patch on the tread where the wear is much different. If you see any of these, change that tire and see if the thump goes away. My experience with belt separation is you chase it around for awhile and it will get worse as you keep driving the car, making it easier to diagnose.

Thank you both very much for your input, but the sound does not follow the tire when rotated to a different location; I've rotated the tires, and the sound remains on the left front.

If it ONLY does it under load, that will help in the diagnosis.
