WA State Auto Emission Codes

I have a 1997 Saturn SL1 and it had failed the emission test with two types of codes, I was wondering if some one could help explain what these mean. The first code is P0420 - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1 and the other is P0133 - O2 Sensor Circuit Slow Response Bank 1 Sensor 1. Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Both sound like Upstream (before the converter) O/2 sensor codes

Thank you for the reply, I had replaced the front O2 sensor and am waiting to borrower a code tester to erase the codes and then run it through emissions again.

If you erase the codes make sure you give it a few days of use before you retest. If the computer has just been reset it will give them a "not ready" when they check it and you will fail again.

I need some advice. I have a 98 chrysler sebring that has a check engine light and this year I need to get an emission test done on it. I have spend in excess of $2000 trying to get rid of the light and Chryler keeps telling me that it isnt worth it to try and fix it because it does not pose a problem. The light has been on for almost

2years and I do have documentation from Chryler on their fixes. The code triggers an emission valve code. Does anyone else have a similar problem?

Hi, I have some food that doesn't taste good. I have tried baking it and broiling it, and no matter what I do, it isn't pleasant to eat. Does anyone else have a similar problem?

Without actually stating the code, this is basically what you are saying. The light means something is wrong, but the code tells you what the computer has found incorrect. Clearly nobody has found out actually why it's incorrect, though. If you have been taking this to the dealer, it's probably worth a letter to the office of the president with copies of all your receipts and info. But without knowing the codes generated, nobody can even guess at your issue.
