what happens if your pcv valve is stuck open?

Just curious if anyone knows the effects of having a PCV valve that is stuck in the "open" position? Would plugs get fouled? Would the car run really bad? or would there be no real noticible difference?

Any info is appreciated.

The PCV valve is supposed to limit the flow of air into the induction system at low engine speeds. View it as being a controlled vacuum leak. At high speeds the 'leak' is essentially not noticeable, but at low speeds if the valve is not working correctly, you can get rough running.

The engine will act like it has a vacuum leak at idle. 'Usually' this will make the idle speed high.

If it is tied into anything like the emissions canister, it can sometimes cause the idle to surge up and down as well.

The PCV valve serves two functions. One is that it has an orifice one it that provides a known and predictable flow rate of air going through it. In other words, a calibrated vacuum leak. That's why it's important to get the correct PCV valve upon replacement, otherwise you mess up the car's air flow calculations. The other main purpose, and probably the most important reason a PCV valve is uses, is that the check valve aspect will prevent an intake backfire flame from travelling back down the PCV hoses and into the crank case, causing an explosion. So, the only time a PCV valve actually closes is if there's a backfire, otherwise it's pretty much wide open all the time.
