won't shift into 3rd on chevy C3500

Hi everyone,

I'm having a problem with an automatic transmission (transmission is

4L80E) on a chevy C3500 1 ton pick-up truck that was loaned to me by a family member, and if anyone here can provide insight into the problem or point me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it. Here is some quick background on the problem ...

About a week ago, the front transmission seal was leaking really bad, so I brought it back to my relative, and he had took it over to a mechanic he uses all the time to fix up his vehicles. The mechanic took care of the leaking seal by replacing it, but also mentioned that the torque converter was also responsible for the leakage and needed replacement. So that work was taken care of too.

I picked up the pick-up truck from the mechanics' house (he works out of his garage) and the truck drove and shifted just fine. But then a few days later, the transmission started acting up and wouldn't shift to 3rd gear from 2nd. After I noticed this, I then noticed that the truck was having trouble shifting into reverse. It *will* go into reverse, but now you really have to push down on the gas pedal to force it to shift.

I decided to change the fluid and trans filter out of concern and to see what kind of debris was now in the pan (I did change the fluid and filter two days before the mechanic touched it) and I now noticed a few small rubber like particles in the bottom of the pan? What could it be from? Clutches? bands?

I also noticed something else that was kind of curious. After I removed the trans filter, I checked out the electrical wiring inside around the top area where the trans filter is plugged into, and I noticed that there was a blue sheathed electrical wire exposed. There was a small break in the sheathing of about 1/4 of an inch where I could see the bare wire. It seemed that it had been deliberately crimped by someone or something. I'm wondering if this could be the cause of the transmission problem and maybe the exposed wire led to do something shorting out. What I'm wondering is, to those who may know, Is the speed sensor of this transmission to the front of where the trans filter is plugged in? The blue sheathed wire , as well as a purple wire, both lead to some kind of module or device to the front of it. As a matter of fact, when you plug your trans filter in, these two wires end up resting on top of the filter.

thank you to anyone who can help me out on this. I just want to see if this problem can be remedied in some way other than just replacing the entire transmission.

The wire may have been bared as part of a diagnostic test. I don't think anybody sabotaged your vehicle on purpose. It also doesn't sound as if the mechanic changed the filter when he changed the front torque converter seal. You can do one without doing the other.

Either way, it's not really relevant now. You're definitely going to have to rebuild this transmission. Parts and pieces in the pan are always a bad sign...as are the shifting problems for that matter. I do suggest a full rebuild however. A good low-mileage used 4L80E is hard to find cheap. The cost of one is pretty darn close to a complete rebuild anyway.
