1986 Toyota pickup - excessive clatter after valve adjustment?

I'm performing the 90K mile maintenance list on my truck. I just adjusted the valves today to the specs that are given in the Haynes manual. All 8 valves needed to be gapped a bit wider. Now when I just test drove it, I was surprised at the extra clatter. It's hard for me to know what's normal noise for this truck, as my other vehicle is a diesel, but it's a bit louder than it was before the adjustment. Can anyone tell me if this is probably normal, or something I should recheck?

Thanks, Jason

On the 20 R engine, I'd prefer looser valves than tight valves. As long as you adjusted the valves while the engine was hot, you should be OK.

Like Ray said, you need to make the lash adjustments on a hot engine. Your engine should be a 22R. Doesn't matter, 20R/22R. Yes, it's a noisy engine in most cases. I wouldn't worry about it. Really. Note* Over tightening of the valve cover nuts can lead to mechanical contact and noise.

I do have a 22R. And I adjusted the valves when the engine was hot. And the ambient temperature was 108 F!

Can you tell me more about this: "Over tightening of the valve cover nuts can lead to mechanical contact and noise."

I looked for torque specs for the nuts, but couldn't find any. So I tightened them down pretty good. Perhaps that is a bit of my noise problem. It doesn't sound like something is wrong to me, just pretty rattley. It's good to know that this is a noisy engine in general. I only have 90K on the truck, and I want to keep it running for a long time yet!

You can tighten the valve cover enough to get the rockers to make contact with the cover.

If you're serious about keeping this vehicle for a long time, then you should seriously consider replacing the timing chain. 90K is about the right time. There are a few small and not so small catastrophes that are bound to occur if you don't. Do a search on the web for "22R timing chain" and you'll get the picture.

Good Luck

Jason, My 1979 Celica (20R engine) Manual specifies "8-11" ft/lbs for the four valve cover bolts. (The spec is found in the cylinder head section; no specs were given in the valve lash instructions- go figure)

Because "Ray O" could, he/she/it opin'd:

You mean like, "A tappy valve is a happy valve" right? Keeps 'em from burning due to not closing all the way . . . .

This I don't understand. All the engines I've ever done (admittedly mostly on motorcycles) specified a COLD engine for valve adjustment. Is the Toyota 20 R engine an exception to that?

Yup!

I've never adjusted the valves on a motorcycle, but on the 20R and 22R, the engine is supposed to be warmed up, probably because they might end up a little tight if adjusted cold.
