1989 cressida auto

When cold it stays in second a long time before changing to next gear after it warms up it behaves normally. Why? Is it something to worry about?

How old is the thermostat?

Does the temperature gauge needle seem to sit lower than it used to, or take a very long time to get up to full-warm?

Do you notice poor output from the interior heater in the winter?

On Toyotas with electronically controlled transmissions (ECT) like the Cressida, the transmission's electronic control unit (ECU) is programmed to delay upshifts until the coolant reaches a certain temperature, IIRC around

70 degrees Fahrenheit (21 Celsius) to help the engine warm up more quickly and reduce emissions.

If the coolant level is low or the thermostat is stuck open, the upshifts will be delayed even more.
