1991 CAMRY FUEL PUMP ISSUE

I havent started the car in a while and I think the fuel pump is sticky. I don't have a workshop manual. Anyone know where on a 1991 wagon the fuel pump is accessed? I can't see it under the body or accessed from the spare bub at the rear.

What do you mean by "sticky"? Makes noise? If you mean intermittent, that could be a fuel pump relay problem (electrical).

Did you do a fuel pressure check? It should be about 40 psi.

The pump is inside the fuel tank. You must remove the fuel tank to gain access to the pump.

I don't remember, but I think you may be able to access the fuel pump through a cover underneath the rear seat.

If the car has not been started in a while and you are getting long cranking times, this may be because the fuel pressure regulator has bled down. After the car has been run for a while, cranking times should be shorter.

What makes you think you have a "sticky" fuel pump? What are the symptoms that the car is displaying?

Thanks for your reply. What I mean by "sticky" is sediment not allowing throughput. Car tuns over initially, fires, then dies. How do I Check fuel pressure?

There is no electrical noise, car turns over, fires, then dies immediately, more quickly when accelerator applied.

I believe that access is still under the rear seat for a wagon.

You will need a fuel pressure gauge with the proper banjo adapters to check fuel pressure at the injector rail(s).

I doubt if sediment in the fuel pump is causing the symptoms you are describing. If the fuel pump pickup screen or fuel pump itself were clogged with sediment, the car would start and idle but not increase RPM or not start at all.

If the hard start is only when the engine is cold, check the coolant temperature sensor and fuel pressure regulator.

If the hard start is all the time, check:

- for vacuum leaks

- the mass air flow sensor to make sure that the oval opening in the sensor is not clogged and the hot wire is not gummed up.

- check for cracks, gaps, holes in the black plastic intake tube between the air filter housing and throttle body

- make sure that the air filter housing is properly closed

- check the idle air control valve and clean if necessary. ( I think this is the cause).
