1997 Toyota Rav4 gas indicator/horn issues

My gas indicator light is reading half tank when the fuel light comes on to indicate that there's no gas in the tank. Not sure if it's related, but I was in my house when the horn started blaring on its own - vehicle was off, it had been parked after a 20 minute drive at speeds of 70 mph in the driveway for an hour when it sounded. Any idea of what the problem is? I called my mechanic and he said they'd have to test the electrical system and he didn't know without seeing it why the horn went off. Any info someone can give me before I drop the car off would be greatly appreciated.

The low fuel indicator sensor is probably bad, or you have a problem with a wire harness somewhere. If you have a security system, the horn may have been the alarm going off.

Unfortunately, intermittent problems are difficult to diagnose without the person performing the diagnosis observing the condition. Hopefully, whoever you take your car to will have a chance to see it.

Actually, I think he's got the same problem my '00 just developed. Our gauge was reading a little over half-full and the "low fuel" indicator light came on. It took 12.7 gallons. I believe it's about a 15 gallon tank.

The low fuel indicator light is right but the gauge is reading high.

I didn't notice any horn involvement; we do have the security system.
