2000 Camry: Engine light on dashboard lit up

The engine light on my 2000 Camry CE just came on for the first time this week. My car has 60,000 miles over 10 years. Should I do anything for this?

The Check Engine Light indicates a malfunction in the engine management/emissions control systems in your car. The first thing to do is to have the codes pulled. There is a diagnostic port on the bottom of the dashboard roughly in the area where your left leg resides as you are driving.

AutoZone -- and others -- have scan tools that connect to this port to extract the malfunction codes. You can't do anything until you pull codes. Well, you can do lots of things, but the odds of any of them being the right thing are slim.

You must correct the fault condition before you car will pass a smog test. The problem can be as simple as putting the gas cap back on, or as complex as the replacement of a host of sensors. Or anyplace in between. Since you are not complaining of any driveability issues, then the cause of the malfunction indicator light (the actual name for this light, by the way) should be on the Easy End of the scale, as opposed to the Difficult End.
