2002 Corolla using excessive oil

I;ve talked about this before here, but just started doing some research and found that there are a LOT of complaints on this model, and often for no apparent reason.

I'm not going to search a site for your car, but I would imagine most problems are related to gelling on the older models. And gelling is usually seen on cars that had too long of oil change intervals.

They already have. Supposedly they modified the heads with slightly larger oil passages, and also reduced the older 7500 mile oil sked down to 5000 miles. That 7500 mile interval was not really a good idea, being as many probably exceeded that by the time they got around to changing the oil. That's why I change my oil at 5k, and use a synth blend to resist gelling. I'm trying to avoid the problems you are seeing. As far as I can tell, at about 63k miles, my engine is pretty clean. I basically burn no oil. I never have to add oil between changes. And I'd like to keep it that way a while. So I don't chinch on the oil changes. Whoever owned your car before you must have.. :( Otherwise, you probably wouldn't be seeing that problem.

No recall that I know of. It's not a safety issue. And they know all about the gelling issues. I imagine they have changed a good number of engines in cars that were still under warranty. With your car 9 years old, and obviously out of warranty, I'm afraid you are basically SOL.

Check Lemon Times for secret warranties. BTW manufacturers never admit to having secret warranties, and they deny their existence unless you know the exact name of the related technical service bulletin or service campaign/goodwill/special consideration (or whatever they call it) or they accidentally tell the truth about it. A quick check of TSBs (NHTSA and AllData list summaries) show nothing related to high oil consumption for that car.

How much oil use is involved here? AFAIK unless the problem is the PCV system, there's no easy fix. The second easiest fix is valve stem seals, and with some cars you can change them without removing the cam(s). I don't know if stuck rings happen much any more, but don't try to unstick them with an oil additive or the oil consumption could shoot way up.
