2005 Sienna Service Questions

Hello -

I took my Sienna into the dealership because the following were on: Check Engine TC (traction control) VSC (stabilty control)

I was told the reason for this was because my fuel injector's needed cleaning (for $200). However, I only have 40,000 miles on the van and use either Shell or Mobil gas.

This doesn't sound right to me...but I wanted to ask the experts.

What are your thoughts about this?

TIA

What are the actual diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) that were stored in the vehicle's computer? The format will be something like P0XXX, where "X" are numerals.

It seems unlikely that the fuel injectors would foul with such low mileage unless you routinely use premium fuel and drive the vehicle for very short trips where the engine doesn't have a chance to reach operating temperature.

For a lot less money, you can try a bottle of Chevron Techron fuel injector cleaner yourself.

Keep in mind that many emissions components should be covered by the vehicle emissions warranty, and it sounds like your van should still be covered by the emissions warranty.

If you post the trouble codes, I can try to narrow down the cause a little.

I didn't think to ask for the trouble codes for this.

Also, I said that there was a rough idle when the a/c was turned on. After the fuel injectors were cleaned...rough idle still existed...and the a/c clutch went out. Sadly...there are 95 clutches on back order throughout the country!!

Thanks again for your help.

Just a mention: When my 4Runner AC clutch was replaced it only lasted a short while. The reason was because there is a special washer (C or E clip style) which doesn't come with some (?) aftermarket replacements. This is an oversize clip sized this way to keep the clutch bearings from traveling too far on the compressor shaft; sorry I don't have the part number.

If your style compressor/clutch is like mine you NEED this clip to avoid replacement, again, as I found out the hard way.

The trouble codes may be listed on your copy of the repair order.

If the injector cleaning didn't cure the condition that it was intended to, I'd ask the service department to refund the cleaning charge.

Check the MAF sensor and idle air control (IAC) circuit to make sure they are not fouled and clean if necessary.

Also check the condition of the spark plugs.

For the AC clutch, if there are that many failures, politely ask if the dealership can offer any goodwill assistance on the repair.

Good luck!

There was a service item regarding the A/C compressor a couple years ago. You might want to visit The SiennaClub.org, google it and check the service updates.

No codes on the work receipt.

The good news is that I have the extended warranty. I know, I know...but in my case, I have come out ahead time and time again with these things whether they are for cars or electronics.

Thanks again for you your help!

If this is still an active issue, take it to AutoZone and have them read the codes, write them down, and post them here. These folks can decipher them well. Always get the codes. Any time the engine light comes on, first thing is to get the codes, then you can discuss from a position of strength. Tomes

Hopefully, the service contract covered the cost of the fuel injector service.

Dang it!!!

Okay...next time: get the codes BEFORE taking the car in and then asking you guys for guideance.

Here's a little salt in the wound: AutoZone is on the way to the dealership....ugh.....

Besides the specific trouble codes, a description of any unusual operating conditions and when they occur, the vehicle model, model year, mileage, and service history would also be useful.

If the check engine light is flashing, stop the vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so, turn off the engine, and call for a tow. If the check engine light is constantly illuminated and not flashing, then any place with an OBD II scanner can pull the trouble codes.
