22RE: cold start screech/squeal

I read the Avalon squeel post, I got it too! ======================================

'85 Celica GT, 297K miles, all stock:

  1. At weather temps below 45 degrees, engine starts normally, but has a high-pitched, screech/squeal noise. With the hood raised, the sound "seems" to be in the area near the fuel injection rail (?). If the gas pedal is quickly "stomped" and released, the noise stops. When the weather is warmer, no noise at start-up.
  2. Clue (?): When cold, the throttle pedal cable won't move freely, it "sticks," needs to be stepped-on to operate smoothly.
  3. Clue (?): When engine is cold, the engine RPMs will drop, almost stalling-out, when the brake pedal is pressed. But, engine operates fine when warmed-up. Plugs, wires, dist. cap & rotor are new. Any ideas? Thanks, da

have you tried spraying the drive belts with water while it is squealing, if this stops it then you know what to fix.

If the above doesn't do it, then get a can of carb cleaner and spray it round the area the sound appears to be coming from, any change of engine speed may be an air leak, I have known these to make a squeal like sound, particularly if it is a paper gasket failure.

the second of the above is consistent with your engine slowing down when the brake pedal is pressed (i.e. it gets even weaker)

hi mrcheerful, thanks for the reply & info.

All three belts are in good shape with low miles, I'll re-inspect them for sufficient tension.

The screech isn't at the front of the engine in the belt area, it's somewhere near the injection rail or below the throttle cable bracket. A car tech pal suspects a vacuum leak; suggested changing all the small hoses (since they are 21 years old) to stop the low RPM in cold weather when the brake pedal is pressed.

I'll inspect all gaskets, too.

BTW, I have an '83 Celica GT with 350K miles, it never had the screech sound - not yet!

My '94 has a (adjustable) fuel pressure bypass valve ... i suppose that could be noisy when cold.

When was the last time u lubed the cable? Something thin.

This suggests a leak in the vacuum to the power brakes or the power brake unit itself.
