'89 Cressida intermittent no spark - only happens at start up.

Have an 89 Cressida, 7MGE engine. It's developed an issue where there will be no spark at startup, confirmed by laying the main wire between the coil and the distributor near a bolt in darkness.

Crank...nothing. Crank...nothing. This might go on for 5 mins or so, then s uddenly there's spark, reattach the wire and the car runs fine. Never dies out while running, this is only an issue at start up. Once it's running it' ll run fine until the next time which might be a few days or a week later.

Any theories on what can be causing this behavior?

Thanks.

bad distributor bad igniter bad coil

with a wiring diagram and a test light you can figure out which one

The pickup coils in the distributor tell the ECM the engine's RPM/position, the ECM tells the igniter, and the igniter turns the coil on/off.
